I read in the local news : MORE than 900 Fareham (United Kingdom) jobs face the axe – because government bosses want to cut costs and boost depressed south Wales. The bombshell has stunned staff at the Office for National Statistics in Titchfield, near Fareham, who have learned their posts could be shifted to Newport, Gwent. The news is in a government-commissioned report written by Sir Michael Lyons, who was asked to look at ways of saving cash and boosting deprived areas. He identified 20,000 jobs that could be moved – including the 960 Titchfield workers responsible for carrying out household surveys, including the census. Sir Michael, director of the Institute of Local Government Studies, at the University of Birmingham, writes: 'The department is keen to move out of Titchfield.' Chancellor Gordon Brown said he accepted the findings of the Sir Michael's report when he delivered his budget yesterday. The move could potentially save as much as £2bn over 15 years. But Veronica Bayne, a senior officer for the PCS union said: 'We're extremely concerned. It's not easy for people in Titchfield to get other jobs and they can't easily be re-deployed.' Fareham MP Mark Hoban said: 'I'm very unhappy about this and think it has caught a lot of people out because we were all lead to believe it was about jobs in London.' A spokesman for the ONS added: 'It makes sense to have more people in one place. 'We will look at the scope for re-deploying staff within the civil service and offering any incentives and support we can give to relocate.'

Sure. 960 people plus their husbands, wives, sons, daughters, older relatives...and they want them to move to...where? Newport? A horrid area in Wales?? Also, as the Fareham MP comments, we have been misled. It was always said it was about moving jobs out of London, to distribute power and knowledge out of the capital city.. but Titchfield is not London at all! As soon as a deadline for the relocation is given, we are starting proceedings to emigrate out of this country. You can keep your Newport, Wales, if you like it.

La bomba exploto ayer en las oficinas de la Office for National Statistics (ONS) en Titchfield, cerca de Fareham, cuando los sorprendidos empleados descubrieron que podrian perder sus puestos de trabajo si no aceptan mudarse a Newport, Gwent. Un informe elaborado por Sir Michael Lyons a peticion del gobierno identifica 20.000 puestos de trabajo que podrian ser transferidos a Gales (incluyendo los 960 de la oficina de Tichfield). Sir Michael, director del Institute of Local Government Studies, en la Universidad de Birmingham, declaro : La ONS aceptaria de buen grado irse de Titchfield. El Canciller Gordon Brown, en su presentacion del presupuesto anual ayer declaro que aceptaba las conclusiones del informe. La mudanza conllevaria un ahorro de 2 billones de libras en 15 anios. Veronica Bayne, miembro del sindicato PCS, dijo en sus declaraciones a la prensa : "Es un tema que nos causa gran preocupacion. Va a ser dificil para los empleados de Titchfield encontrar nuevos puestos de trabajo y mudarse a Newport no es tan facil". El diputado por Fareham Mark Hoban declaro : "Estoy profundamente descontento con esta situacion. Nos ha pillado de sorpresa porque se nos hizo creer que se trataba de mover puestos de trabajo fuera de Londres". Un portavoz de la ONS confirmo :"Es mas practico tener a todo el personal junto en una misma zona. Vamos a hacer todo lo posible para reorganizar los puestos de trabajo y motivar a los empleados a que se muden".


Llevo un cabreo impresionante. Por la noticia y por la manera en que, de subito, lo han comunicado. Que quede claro que os he avisado...
Ya. Seguro. 960 empleados, mas sus esposas/os, novias/os, hijas/os, padres ancianos a su cargo...y el gobierno les ordena que vivan en otra parte o pierdan sus puestos de trabajo, Y para ir a vivir..donde? Newport? Pero si es una zona horrible en Gales! Ademas, el tema aqui estaba en descentralizar el poder fuera de Londres y transferir puestos de trabajo de Londres al resto de condados. Y esto es, justamente, lo que no se hace. Pues bien, 'Sir' Michael Lyons (y permite que ponga en duda el 'Sir'!) yo no trabajo para la ONS, pero SK si lo hace. Y esto afecta mi puesto de trabajo, que me encanta, en una institucion universitaria con mas decencia y principios que la ONS. Asi que, desde aqui te digo 'Sir' Michael Lyons....vete tu a Newport, Gales, si tienes cojones. Yo no voy. Tan pronto como se haga publica la fecha de la mudanza, nosotros empezaremos nuestros tramites de emigracion. Tu y tus colegas del gobierno os podeis meter Newport, Gales, donde os quepa.
