A film I will certainly not watch : I Robot with Will Smith. As the movie website says, the film is as 'suggested by Isaac Asimov's book'. Suggested, yes. Meaning let's grab a couple of ideas from the book, let's use the title and then let's add a lot of CRAP to make the movie. Just as they did with 'The Bi-centennial Man'. And man, wasn't I angry then! So in I Robot we end up with an action-packed film with Will Smith chasing an evil robot in a futuristic city. If you want that, fine. But don't think you are getting an Asimov plot here.

Read the book. Read 'I Robot', nine short sci-fi stories about the early positronic robots invented by Asimov. You will then realise that there are no 'evil' robots at all. And if you read the rest of Asimov's books, the Foundation series and the Robot series, you will realise pretty soon that Asimov loved his robot characters. They are more developed, intelligent and lovable than the human characters themselves! Asimov mentioned once that he got more letters from readers complaining about R.Giskard's "death" (a very special robot) than complaining about Elijah Bailey's death (a human and co-protagonist of most of the Robots'series). I guess that's why he never dared 'kill' R.Daneel Olivaw (now..what a very very special robot!), but let us imagine he would be there, in a human shape but with positronic brain, forever and ever taking care of humanity. And that is the clue, revealed in the last book of the Foundation series. The 'machine' created by human beings has been there for thousands of centuries, making sure human beings as a species does not become extinct. What a twist!

This Saturday 31st July we'll be able to see a Blue Moon. But let's not get too excited. The term 'blue Moon' doesn't mean the Moon will be coloured in blue. According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen. According to the Blue Moon Calculator Australia, New Zealand and the Far East will see two Full Moons in August while the rest of the world will see them in July.

No. Ni mucho menos.

Today I received the the following email. It truly made me laugh:

So you are not a success!!!

Are you feeling like a failure? Your life not gone the way you planned? Feel
you have not reached your potential? Well the good news is you are not alone!
Millions feel like you do. Society has imbued the belief that we should all be
striving for perfection. To be the best, to be top of the tree. If you
don't succeed in that quest then there must be something seriously wrong
with you.
Well I am here to let you know that is rubbish. Sure some will get there and
then they will make millions selling you the book on how to do the same. The
point is only a small minority can make it. So why beat yourself up thinking
how bad you are. Lets not play the game. Stuff em! Millions of people are in
low paying , dirty, demeaning jobs and that is where most will stay.

One ejaculation has roughly 1,000,000 sperm. Out of all these sperm 1 or
maybe 2 will succeed in reaching the egg. Now call me old fashioned but that
isn't great odds in my book! My point is (if sperm could think) why should
999,999 feel like a failure and get depressed.
How many of your neighbours have won Olympic gold? I would hazard a guess
at not a lot.

So this mail is for all you losers out there. Including me. I am not perfect
and I am not going to try to be perfect. Let us rejoice in the fact that our
lives are a mess. We are after all in the majority. In a democracy we should
be running the show. Ignore your self-help books and be proud to be normal.
Depression is killing our communities because we all believe that we should
excel in all we do.

If you have a broken marriage, pat yourself on the back. You are free to
meet new people now. If you cant hold down a job, then you have freedom
to do with your wasted life whatever you want. If you are stuck in a rut that
you cant get out of, then look around you and you will see millions of
others in the same position. So why feel guilty and worthless??? You
shouldn't! If you have survived another day then congratulations. One day
you won't!!! And the good news is... Neither will anyone else!!! So
come on all you no hopers, down and outs and general outsiders with no place
in society. Rise up and say "I have failed but by Jove, I am going to enjoy
being a loser!!!" Lets just live life and take away these unreachable goals.

And for all those who have succeeded Well done!.. What do you want, a
medal?

Hoy recibi el siguiente email. Me hizo reir. Mucho.

No funcionas, no sirves.

My first memory of a tv sci-fi series is not -curiously enough -Star Trek but the British series Space 1999, where Martin Landau and the 311 residents of Moonbase Alpha found themselves adrift in space with no way to control their course through the interstellar void after a nuclear accident at a lunar-based waste disposal site propelled our Moon out of Earth orbit and into deep space. I had not thought about Space 1999 for years and years. I had become a total Next Generation trekkie and forgotten the fascination that Space 1999 held for me when I was a child. Today, a comment about Star Wars and Star Trek fans in Hightoro's blog reminded me of Space 1999. So let this be a homage to the doomed residents of Moonbase Alpha and Martin Landau's enigmatic face, wherever it is they are nowadays! Some websites dedicated to Space 1999: Space 1999.org , The Catacombs and Space 1999.net

This weekend we bought fresh clams and SD prepared a clam chowder. A shame it could not be served as they do at the Boudin Bakery , in San Francisco Bay, as you can see in the photo above, where the chowder has been poured inside the sourdough bread. Delicious!

This is how to make New England Clam Chowder:
½ lb. bacon, chopped
4 large potatoes, peeled and diced (or Red or White skinned potatoes work well unpeeled)
2 Tbs. butter
1 ½ C. chopped onions
1 C chopped celery (about 3 ribs)
1/2 teaspoon whole thyme (dried, powdered can be used also)
2 6 oz. cans chopped clams
3 cups milk
1 C cream (substitute milk if desired)
1 C. bottled clam juice (water if not available)
Salt and pepper to taste.
2 T flour or cornstarch mixed with 1/2 C water

Instructions:
1.Brown the bacon in a large dutch-oven sized pan. Remove bacon, leaving drippings in pan.
2. Add onions and celery simmering them in drippings to partially cook.
Add flour , stir in and cook for 1 minute.
3.Add potatoes, liquid from the 2 cans of clams (reserve clams to be added later, as they toughen with cooking). Clam juice or water, 2 Tbs. Butter, salt and pepper.
4.Stir over medium heat till potatoes are tender.
5. Add milk, clams, and bacon.
6.If you desire a thicker chowder add the extra flour or cornstarch paste to to the chowder when it is done and let it simmer for 1 minute.
7.Serving suggestion .Cut a lid out of a small round loaf of sourdough bread like you do a pumpkin. Hollow out most of the bread. Toast lightly in the oven and serve the soup in the bread bowl

Bacon cortado a tiras
4 patatas grandes peladas y cortadas a cubitos
2 cucharadas soperas de mantequilla
1 taza y media de cebolla cortada finamente
1 apio cortado finamente

Another good website if you want to look and book hotels in Europe : Venere.com . This website is available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Deutch, providing a good overview of hotels in many European cities. The search facility is very easy. Choose country, choose city, choose dates. Then ask to 'View results on map'. Venere will draw the first map above for you (that is Rome, for instance) where you can see the different areas. Click in one area and it will display the second type of map above. This second map allows you to see all the hotels (blue squares) Venere offers in that neighbourhood but even better, passing your mouse on top of each blue square, a little box will appear telling you the hotel's name, star rating and aprox. price for the total duration of your stay. This I found extremely quick and useful. Now I do not have to open windows for all the hotels to check their location, price and photos. Venere is very easy and visual. I will only do that once I've found the type of hotel I am interested in. And I think I almost have it now...

A good website to give you a general idea about public transportation abroad is Slow Travel . I was looking for a bit of information on Rome's bus & underground system and Slow Travel was excellent. It even provides photos of bus/underground tickets, so you know how they look like!

The story of the two frogs as told in the film 'Catch me if you Can', when Frank Abagnale's father is awarded with a Rotary Diploma and explains the clue of his success:

"Two young frogs fell into a bucket of milk. Both tried to jump to freedom, but the sides of the bucket were steep and no foundation was to be had on the surface of the liquid. Seeing little chance of escape, the first frog soon despaired and stopped jumping. After a short while he sunk to the bottom of the bucket and drowned.
The second frog also saw no likelihood of success, but he never stopped trying. Even though each jump seemed to reach the same inadequate height, he kept on struggling. Eventually, his persistent efforts churned some milk into butter. From the now hardened surface of the milk, he managed to leap out of the bucket.

The moral of the story: Those who don't give up and are persistent may be in for a pleasant surprise!"

We used this recipe the last weekend, which we got from Waitrose. Twice! It was delicious and very easy to cook. Try it. You won't regret it!

Spaghetti with Cockles

Serves: 4

Ingredients

1.5kg fresh cockles
3 shallots, finely sliced
200ml Chambéry or other dry vermouth
400g spaghetti
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
8 slices back bacon, finely diced
2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
A pinch of dried chilli flakes
3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
Zest of 2 lemons, finely grated
Instructions

Wash the cockles under cold water. Discard any that are broken or refuse to close when lightly tapped. Put the shallots and vermouth in a wide saucepan and set over a high heat. As soon as it comes to the boil, add a single layer of cockles and cover. Cook for 1-2 minutes, quickly transferring them to a large bowl as they open. Discard any that do not fully open. Repeat the process until they are all cooked. Remove them from their shells, then cover and chill until needed.

Cook the spaghetti according to the instructions on the packet. About 5 minutes before it is ready, heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the bacon. As soon as it begins to crisp, add the garlic, followed by the chilli flakes. Fry for a minute, then stir in the cooked cockles, parsley and lemon zest. Add lemon juice to taste.

Drain the pasta, add a twist or two of freshly ground black pepper and toss with the cockle sauce. Serve immediately.

Let me share an intimate moment with you....yesterday morning I was phylosophizing while sitting at the toilet. Then the shower curtain rod fell on my head. Gravity, you see. It was irreparably damaged, broken.   Our landlord, deciding to cover the whole lenght of the bath, had bought an L shaped rod. The pointy bit of the L had no support but was always holding on the air. No wonder then that,  some years of gravity work on it made it fall on my head. Now with our new shower curtain rod, which we bought yesterday, my life has totally changed. And yours will, too! Look at this:

These stainless steel curved shower curtain rods will give you the feel of a larger tub — without the time and expense of installing a new one.Fits All Standard Tubs and Shower Curtains These curved shower curtain rods fit, or adjust to, all standard-installation 5'tubs.

In the UK the saying goes that if it rains on 15 July, also known as St Swithin's Day, it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.  St Swithin was a Saxon bishop of Winchester who asked, in humility on his deathbead to be buried outdoors, where he would be rained on.  Legend has it his remains were moved inside the cathedral in 971, after which it rained for 40 days and nights - hence the weather lore began:

St Swithin's Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin's Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more.

Statistics show that there is very little truth in the saying. No occasions in the weather record show a period of wet or dry weather lasting that long after a rainy or dry 15 July. Some years have come close - in 1976, 38 of the following 40 days were dry across southern England but this followed heavy showers and thunderstorms on the evening of the 15th itself.

St Swithin's Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin's Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more.

A very good idea but poorly delivered : The 360 Virtual City Tour of Portsmouth . It is not an extremely beautiful city, but badly chosen angles and views plus poor lightning don't make Portsmouth any favours. A total cock-up.

I love Chinese food. Or I'd better say 'the Chinese food we get at restaurants in Europe', as I have never been in China and tried the 'real' Chinese food. I think in Europe they feed us a mix of the most popular dishes from the main Chinese cuisines : Shangai, Canton, Szechuan and Beijing. For a nice website with Chinese recipes, have a look here : Chinavista . Unfortunately, Chinese restaurants are expensive in the United Kingdom compared to, say, Indian restaurants. There is a well established Indian population in the UK, so it is not surprising there is a lot of competition. But curiously enough, Chinese restaurants seem to be mostly a cheap option in many countries. For instance, in Spain they are very well known for their very affordable prices and the variety of menus. Nowadays, there is a Chinese restaurant at every corner (almos!). But the Chinese community has been only established in Spain since the early 90s and they are still a minority. Probably there are more Chinese citizens in the United Kingdom. So how come that Chinese restaurants are that expensive? This question doesn't allow me to sleep But then, again...maybe I should not wonder. After all, everything is expensive here!

I have been helping at our second graduation day. It has been sunny but not excessively hot - just as well, as the Guildhall does not have air conditioning!-and we've had a very impressive ceremony. Even if my gown was terrible, old and crusty, something they use for foreign representatives. If I'm helping again next year, I'm going to lie as hell and tell them I have a PhD by Oxford University, let's see if they give me a more fashionable gown!

Friday at last! Good weekend to all of you! And if it's cloudy, now you can blame plankton. No joking. A research-funded by NASA confirms that when the sun is too strong, plankton create clouds to protect themselves.See here: Plankton make clouds

After a conversation with one of SD's colleagues this morning.. I am seriously considering the possibility of applying for a driving licence. Mind you, I am sooo lazy that probably I will fail even to appear for the practical test..and will probably fall asleep on top of the keyboard while sitting the theory test. So...I keep seriously considering it for the moment!

A couple of months ago we got some sunflower seeds and planted them in the garden. The weather was very good for growing plants. It rained a bit every night and it was sunny during the day. Our sunflowers happily grew. Then the weather changed. For a whole week the sunflowers were exposed to very strong and constant wind and showers. Most of the leaves broke and no matter our carefully tying the plants to sticks, the wind was too strong even for the sticks! Then the weather changed again and we thought our sunflowers were damaged, but would survive. I lost hope of winning the 'Tallest sunflower in the city' competition, though, because that strong wind had really really weakened the plants. And now the wind is back again. Strong wind. Gales. Today, tomorrow and many more days to come, according to the weather forecast. I think this time our sunflowers will not survive, as they are in the most delicate moment of their growth, when the flower is starting to sprout. And now you are waiting for the moral of the story. Sorry to disappoint you. It doesn't have any. Apart from 'fuck the British weather!'.

Ah the joys of summer! Barbeques, for instance. For a colleague of mine, his barbeque was more a horror than a joy...the poor soul was telling me today how he bought an 'instant barbeque' this weekend. It is quite a useful thing, the 'instant barbeque'. It is an aluminum box with a grill on top and filled with coal. Just light it and start cooking! When it's finished, throw it away and that's it. Very practical to take anywhere and improvising barbeques on the spot. However, that little box became a horrid nightmare for my colleague. Thinking the fire was off, he left the box on a wooden board, placed on top of a wooden table standing on his garden deck. Guess what. The heat from the coal burnt the wooden board, went through the wooden table, down a leg and ended up burning the whole decking! Waking up at 3 in the morning, my colleague decided it was too hot in the house and went to open the window...to his horror, he saw a glowing light down in the garden, rushed downstairs, and forgetting about the hosepipe due to the panic, filled a cooking pot with water and spent almost an hour dousing the deck and putting off the fire. I have used 'instant barbeques' several times and never ocurred to me such a thing could happen. This story was a wake-up call for me. Let this be a warning for us all! Make sure the barbeque is off by liberally spraying it with water, and never ever, leave an aluminum instant barbeque box on top of any inflamable surface!

On 5th July 1954, Elvis Presley recorded That's all right, his first single, at the Sun Studios, Memphis. Today, 50 years later, the song that, for many people, signalled the birthday of rock and roll will be played at the same time in more than 1000 radio stations around the world. Elvis'fans will also meet in Memphis to celebrate the anniversary. Yes, there is always a good reason for Memphis to organise a party and let the good times roll...

My friend's AP thoughts on food when I accuse him of eating only Pot Noodles:"That is right. Nothing but Pot Noodles. But what you dont know is that Pot Noodles encompass almost every food in the world. The variety is astonishing. You have Oriental Sweet & Sour, Spicy Chinese Chicken, Spicy Chilli. Then there is Pot Rice and Pot Pasta. It is endless. Discover Pot Noodle and you eat the world!" And no. He doesn't work in marketing or an ad agency. He should. What a waste of talent!. With this statement, AP has demonstrated he can really really argument the benefits of Pot Noodles against Paul Hogan's article in The Observer.

Say you want to read a book online and for free. You may find it at The Online Books Page which will direct you to the appropriate online Library. The oldest free online Library is Project Gutenberg . But be aware that they cannot publish any texts still in copyright. This generally means that their texts are taken from books published pre-1923. So if you want to read Gone with the Wind or Alice in Wonderland, to mention two examples, then you can do it for free. But if you want the latest bestseller, unfortunately you will still have to pay for it or borrow it from your local Library.
